🌟 Fun Facts – Sherman Park
- Named after Gen. Sherman – Originally called “Perrigo Park” when acquired in 1891, it was soon renamed Sherman Park in honor of Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman—completing a trio of iconic city parks alongside Lake Park and Washington Park
- Once farmland turned flourishing suburb – In the late 1890s, German immigrants began developing homesteads and charming Tudor- and Craftsman-style homes. By 1900–1920, the area attracted middle-class professionals, along with Irish, English, Polish, and Jewish families, creating one of Milwaukee’s earliest “melting pot” neighborhoods
- Architectural gems – Nearly every home in Sherman Park was built between 1910 and 1930, with a remarkable variety of styles—from brick-and-stone Tudors and American Foursquares to bungalow cottages
- Strong community spirit – The Sherman Park Community Association, founded in 1971, emerged to unite residents around local development, cultural diversity, and neighborhood preservation
