Column by Executive Director Susan Scot FryAs usual, I forgot to get photos... Mea culpa. I got so wrapped up in having fun with my fellow enthusiasts that I forgot to step back, put on my staff hat, and snap some snaps at the Shakespeare in the Park Member’s Salon* on Friday, November 30th. In homage to 2019’s upcoming production of The Comedy of Errors, the topical topic was “What is Comedy?” Needless to say there were plenty of laughs that night as we explored what makes us laugh and why. Everyone had a story. So lively was the conversation, there were even some clips shared later on the member’s Facebook page. 2019 will mark the 10th anniversary of Shakespeare in the Park. Even more salons, outings and special recognitions are in the works. (Hint, hint – Membership makes a great gift. It’s the gift that gives and gives.) So, this newsletter’s missive from me is a special thanks to all 120 of our Members. We could not offer Shakespeare in the Park for free to 96% of our audience if we didn’t have members. Whether you join for the group activities and special invitations, discounts at local businesses, or just knowing that you can reserve a seat ahead of time for any show date you like, your membership makes a huge difference. Our challenge is to be 300 strong in 2019! Spread the word! Optimistically, Susan *Special thanks, again, to Founding Members David HB Drake and Jennifer Esh for hosting that salon! We're very happy to announce that Sazama's Fine Catering will have a food concession and cash bar beginning at 6:15 p.m. every night, including selections like:
mozzarella marinara and sour cream & chive fries
Note: The Marcus Center for the Performing Arts is a non-profit organization and asks that you leave your adult beverages at home. You can purchase wine, beer and cocktails from Sazama’s Rivers Edge Patio. Proceeds from sales help offset expenses and ensure the continued success of the Marcus Center and its resident groups (including Optimist Theater). Please do your part to support this event. In addition, Shakespeare in the Park Members will be able to enjoy table service in the Member Hospitality area! 2017's Shakespeare in the Park will be presented at the Peck Pavilion at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts!!!! Shakespeare in the Park is joining the Marcus Center's company as a new resident group. The Marcus Center has a rich history of providing top-notch free entertainment via their Live @ Peck Pavilion summer series. Inviting Shakespeare in the Park to join the fun is a natural partnership. You can read the full press release here, issued today by Optimist Theatre. There are a LOT of reasons that we are excited about this partnership, including the opportunity to enhance the audience experience, to broaden our community outreach...to offer you Saz's catering before the show (really!). We'll keep you informed as some of the new logistics of coming to this year's show come together. In the meanwhile, pre-production is revving up: auditions and casting are in progress. We're fundraising like mad to ensure that we are able to meet all of our new obligations.
Of course, it's not at all too soon to mark the 2017 Shakespeare in the Park show dates for Much Ado About Nothing on your calendar: Weekends, July 6-22, 2017 As with each step forward that Shakespeare in the Park has made over the last seven years, this is only possible because of a devoted core of donors and members who believe in our mission. Thank you for helping this new leap forward happen!
Of course, if you have questions about this change, contact Susan by e-mail or at 262.498.5777.
Shakespeare in the Park members enjoyed their first Members-Only Event on November 13. The Salon-style evening was hosted by Susan and Ron Scot Fry. The freewheeling discussion took in Shakespeare in general and Julius Caesar in particular, along with a range of other topics as they arose naturally. As the first foray of the format, all present agreed it was a thumping success! We are considering dates for the next such event in January, and look forward to more great company and equally stimulating conversation! To receive your invitation, and add YOUR smiling face (or that of your friends/family -- membership makes a terrific holiday gift!) to this group in 2016, visit our Membership Page.
